First light and last light are informal terms for the natural light around the edges of the day. This page shows the named twilight boundaries so you can choose a clear reference instead of assuming those phrases always mean the same time.

What does first light mean?
For everyday outdoor planning, civil dawn is often a useful interpretation. At that boundary, the Sun’s center is 6° below the horizon and the brighter stage of morning twilight begins. The first-light card on this site uses that definition.
Someone observing faint stars may instead care about astronomical dawn, which begins earlier at −18°. A photographer may want the blue-hour interval between −6° and −4°. Neither should be confused with sunrise, when the solar disk reaches the standard horizon.
What does last light mean?
Last light can mean the last practical illumination for a task or the final stage of twilight in the sky. Civil dusk is the brighter-stage boundary, while astronomical dusk is the end of the standard astronomical twilight sequence.
For an evening outdoors, compare sunset and civil dusk, then account for the actual setting. A wooded path may become difficult to see while an open horizon remains bright. For night-sky planning, astronomical dusk is more relevant, together with the Moon and nearby lighting.
Choose a named boundary for a shared plan
If you are arranging a meeting, shoot or outdoor task with someone else, use a clock time and a named event. “Meet at civil dawn” is more precise than “meet at first light,” and a local date and time zone remove another possible misunderstanding.
The table helps you connect that event to sunrise or sunset. It does not forecast the light under cloud, determine legal activity hours or calculate a brightness level for your exact surroundings.
Why there is no fixed offset
The spacing between dawn, sunrise, sunset and dusk depends on latitude and season. First light is not always 30 minutes before sunrise, and last light is not always 30 minutes after sunset. High-latitude summer twilight may continue from one date into the next.
Frequently asked questions
Is daybreak another word for sunrise?
Daybreak commonly refers to the morning becoming light, which begins before sunrise. Because usage varies, use civil dawn or sunrise explicitly when a precise event matters.
Does first light mean I can see clearly outdoors?
It does not guarantee visibility. Civil dawn is a solar-angle reference; weather, vegetation and terrain affect the light reaching the ground. Match the plan to the actual environment.
Can last light be later than civil dusk?
Yes, depending on what you mean. Twilight continues through nautical and astronomical stages after civil dusk where those stages occur. The sky can retain light after ground-level tasks become difficult.
Which time should a photographer use?
Choose according to the image. Blue hour suits a twilight sky with artificial lights, while low direct sunlight belongs to the later morning or earlier evening part of golden hour. Check the site’s specific altitude windows rather than using first or last light as a substitute.
