Dawn and Dusk Times Today

Find dawn and dusk times for the selected place and date. Dawn labels the morning boundaries as the sky brightens; dusk labels the corresponding evening boundaries as it darkens. Neither is a single substitute for sunrise or sunset.

Read the morning and evening in order

On a date with all the usual events, the morning sequence is astronomical dawn, nautical dawn, civil dawn and sunrise. The evening runs in reverse: sunset, civil dusk, nautical dusk and astronomical dusk. The detailed events list gives the times for each boundary.

Civil dawn and civil dusk are defined at a solar altitude of −6°. Nautical boundaries use −12°, and astronomical boundaries use −18°. Naming the boundary matters: two people asking for dawn may mean very different stages of morning light.

Which dawn should you plan around?

For an early outdoor start, civil dawn provides a more practical reference than astronomical dawn. The surroundings are generally brighter, but cloud, woodland and local terrain still affect visibility. For a sunrise photograph, you may want to arrive during twilight to prepare before the Sun appears.

For faint-sky observing, astronomical dawn is the relevant warning that solar twilight is beginning. It comes well before sunrise. The blue-hour page covers a later morning interval when sky brightness is better suited to architecture and cityscape photography.

Which dusk is most useful?

Use civil dusk when comparing the remaining natural light after sunset. Use astronomical dusk to identify the beginning of astronomical night. The period between them is still twilight, even when the ground already looks dark.

Dusk is not a forecast of cloud color or an exact measure of illumination. The calculation describes solar geometry; the appearance of your scene depends on the atmosphere, the Moon and nearby lights.

Why the interval changes

Twilight lasts longer when the Sun moves below the horizon at a shallow angle. That angle changes with latitude and season. At high latitudes, evening twilight can merge into the following morning without a period of astronomical night.

The calculation only lists crossings within the selected local calendar date. A dash beside one boundary does not imply every other event is missing. Read the available stages together to understand whether the Sun rises, sets or remains within a twilight band.

Frequently asked questions

Are dawn and sunrise the same?

No. Dawn occurs before sunrise and is described using the Sun’s position below the horizon. Sunrise uses a different definition tied to the Sun’s upper edge reaching a standard horizon.

Is dusk the same as nightfall?

Nightfall is an everyday term without one fixed solar angle. Dusk becomes precise when you name its type: civil, nautical or astronomical. Use the named event when comparing calculators or making a timed plan.

Are morning and evening twilight the same length?

They are often similar at a given place, but they need not match exactly. Solar geometry changes during the day, and civil clock changes can affect how intervals look. Compare the actual event times instead of assuming symmetry.

Can there be dawn without a sunrise?

Yes. During some polar-night dates, the Sun stays below the horizon but rises high enough to produce one or more twilight stages. Dawn and dusk can occur even though there is no sunrise or sunset.
